Herbal Medicine
'Herbal Medicine has been practised for thousands of years and even today up to 80% of the world's population rely on herbs to treat disease and promote wellbeing.' - World Health Organisation. Herbalism is a natural medicine system that aims to restore the body's self healing mechanism or 'vital force'. Herbalists treat the cause of the illness with individual tailor made prescriptions in the form of tinctures, teas, creams and oils. The use of the whole plant increases the therapeutic effect, working in harmony with the body's systems and restoring health and vitality without some of the side effects found in modern medicine. Did you know that many medical complaints that you could take to your doctor could also be treated with herbal medicine? Herbal medicine is suited to people of all ages, and offers safe and effective relief in the treatment of both acute and chronic conditions. In many cases herbal medicine can be used safely in conjunction with modern medicine if required. A qualified herbalist can also determine when further investigation or referral to a specialist is necessary.
The ConsultationThe first consultation will take up to 2 hours. An extensive medical history will be taken. It is helpful to bring details of any conventional medicines you may be taking to ensure compatibility of the herbs chosen for the treatment of your condition. Jan will perform basic diagnostic tests such as pulse, blood pressure and tongue diagnosis. A simple physical examination may also be necessary to identify any weaknesses that may be the root of the problem. She can then draw up an appropriate treatment plan and discuss this with the patient. Herbal Medicine may not be the most suitable treatment for a particular individual, so Jan may suggest using Flower Essences, Aromatherapy, Crystal Therapy, Counselling, Stress Management, Nutritional Therapy or a combination of treatments. Herbal Medicine consists of a prescription of several different herbs made up to suit the individual. Lifestyle and dietary advice may also be given. A follow up appointment may be arranged. This will depend upon the type of condition treated but, will normally be within a two to four week period. Acute conditions may only require a single visit.
