Diet and Nutritional Therapy
Scientists believe that human DNA is good enough to give us 120 years of life. How many of us would realistically expect to reach even 100 years old? But what if 60 really were the halfway point and better still, we still felt fit and healthy at that age? Unfortunately, now-a-days, both the longevity and quality of life is greatly affected by poor nutrition and lifestyle choices. Heart disease, cancer, and stroke are the number one, two and three diseases, and they are killing people earlier than they ought to be. What happens when you eat the wrong foods instead of the right ones? Well, there are two kinds of nutrients – micronutrients and macronutrients. The problem with micronutrients is that we consume far too few of them. Micronutrient deficiencies cause micro damage, damage to our individual molecules. One of the biggest micro damages is free radical damage, also known as oxidative stress. As your body burns (oxidizes) food for energy, you produce free radical molecules. These molecules are missing an electron and bounce around doing damage to the other molecules in your body: a single cell typically withstands thousands of oxidative ‘hits’ a day. So we have become dependent on the plant kingdom to provide us with antioxidants and other phytonutrients (micronutrients found in plants) that neutralize these free radicals and keep them from damaging our DNA and other molecules. The problem with macronutrients – carbohydrates, proteins and fats – is that we consume far too many of the wrong kinds. This is especially true of carbohydrates, a fact that has led to the current increase in Metabolic Syndrome, which can be a precursor for Diabetes Type II. What are carbohydrates? They’re fruits and vegetables and all the various grain and grain-based products you see. Carbohydrates as a whole are not a problem if you eat the right type in a balanced diet. Our body needs carbohydrates. The problem is that a lot of people tend to eat too much of the refined and processed carbohydrates. One of the things that science discovered is that vitamin C is but one of thousands of phytonutrients found in fruits and vegetables. It is true that a vitamin C supplement contains much higher levels of the vitamin than eating a raw apple or orange, but fruits such as apples, oranges, cranberries, pineapples and peaches have a greater ability to reduce free radial activity than the average vitamin C supplement. This is because there is much more than just vitamin C involved in the process. Antioxidants work together and support each other in ways that science is just beginning to study, let alone fully understand. It is this synergy among thousands of phytonutrients that creates the power of whole food nutrition. When I see a patient for any of the treatments that I offer I always devote a lot of time finding out what you eat and drink. Have you ever heard the saying ‘You are what you eat?’ It is so true. Many of my patients have felt considerably better just by taking my advice on their diet – before the other part of their treatment plan has had time to enhance their recovery! But not everyone can make the changes that I recommend. Personal taste, frenetic lifestyle, lack of cooking skills, cost, family considerations and other problems can stop them from being able to achieve optimum nutrition. This is why I also recommend Juice Plus+ whole fruit and vegetable supplements. Even with the best of intentions it is hard to give the body the nutrition it really needs. Juice Plus+ provides more of the whole food based nutrition we need every day to make up for the deficiencies in our modern diet. By taking the supplements regularly you will reduce oxidative stress on the body and therefore slow down the ageing process internally – and externally! Feel great, look great.
